Confronting fear to get the dances you want

Tango puts us in intimate proximity to other people and can bring a great deal of anxiety. How do you overcome that fear?
Yelizaveta Nersesova, tango teacher from LA, explores the source of those fears and the barriers they create.
Yelizaveta experienced that first-hand and is sharing how she overcame her fears and keeps developing her confidence as a dancer and teacher.
Well-known tango teacher and dancer in Los Angeles, Yelizaveta produces a weekly podcast called "Tango Banter", where she brings more awareness about the challenges we face in the tango community and how we can address them.
"I have been dancing tango since 2009. When I started, I was the most unlikely social dancer that you could think of. Plagued by crippling social anxiety, lack of self-esteem, and distorted body image, tango was the absolute last thing I ever wanted to do. But luckily, I was just lonely enough that facing my biggest fears seemed better than spending another night alone at home.
"It didn’t take long for my tango obsession to set in, and with it came every possible fear and limiting belief that I was forced to confront in order to continue on this path.
"In my darkest moment, I found myself in an abusive relationship with another tango dancer which threatened my well-being and even my life. But what was a deeply traumatic experience became a source of true personal power which helped transform my life and my tango. Now it is my mission to support and empower other dancers to transform their limitations into fuel for getting what they really want."
